Meet Derek
I've been solving human problems since childhood, analyzing traffic patterns to predict self-serving behavior. Turns out, gridlock, office politics, and governmental corruption share the same root cause: the collapse of personal and collective integrity.
I was born into a life that amplified my empathic nature early. Following my parents through 12 schools by high school, I was perpetually the new kid—an outsider navigating Dutch immigrant culture at home and American social dynamics everywhere else. I learned to build friendships quickly and let go easily. Diplomacy became survival.
From managing family conflicts and substantial traumas to becoming a world-champion rower and team captain, discipline, drive, and devotion became core to who I am. I made mistakes. I experienced every humiliation and heartbreak deeply, but transformed each into a learning opportunity that exposed elements of my humanity I hadn't yet understood.
I learned early that sustainable performance requires alignment: body, mind, and values working in concert. That principle became the philosophical and psychological framework defining everything I've done since.
Explore My ApproachI've worked in government (Congressional and Executive branches), corporate consulting (Deloitte), and tech startups (OneRoof, Blackboard, DoubleDutch). I founded a company, built award-winning client teams, and witnessed the backstabbing, toxic politics, and Machiavellian scheming that destroys most people's integrity as they get dragged into power games. I studied it all from the inside out.
In 2014, after sitting with my stepfather's death, I took radical responsibility for my life. I left the Bay Area, downsized dramatically, and rebuilt myself around one principle: radical integrity—the alignment of values, words, and actions. I embraced ecstatic dance and contact improvisation as my therapy, physical practice, artistic pursuit, and community. My grounded, calm energy isn't a persona. It's proof the work I teach actually works.
For over a decade, I've served as an organizational dynamics consultant, helping leaders and teams restore the integrity that success eroded, rebuild trust, reorient their relationship with power, and lead from calm, compassionate clarity rather than coercion, control, and conflict.
